People all over the world are being addicted to Facebook and similar sites!! According to http://www.thedailymind.com/productivity/facebook-syndrome-8-ways-to-beat-your-facebook-addiction/, the U.S. is wasting billions of dollars each year from people wasting time on the Internet and not working. But fear not, even if we are still in middle school, the addiction can be beaten! Just click on the link above.Facebook has become immensely popular over the last few years. Now, more than ever, Facebook is more popular than MySpace. It is now tied for first with Twitter. Kids and adults of all ages are getting a Facebook. Thing is, Facebook has been specially “formulated” to be unbelievably addictive to everyone. There is a real mental disorder called FAD- Facebook Addiction Disorder. Sure, Facebook is great, but it is also harmful since more and more people are getting FAD. For more information, a great site is http://media.www.the-telescope.com/media/storage/paper749/news/2009/11/16/Opinion/Youre.A.Facebook.Addict.If-3833468.shtml.

This survey has shown that 1 in 7 adults are on Facebook 24/7. Check out the graph.

But always remember- there usually is a good side to everything. For celebrities, Facebook is simply awesome since they can post their current news and technically, its like free advertising. Also, if you have a last-minute question on homework and you don’t want to call anyone, you can chat with a friend that is online and get the info that you need.

Now think back on yourself. Are you addicted? The sites above tell you everything you need to know about FAD. Facebook addiction is hard to beat, but it is curable. And besides, curing FAD doesn’t mean that you have to ban yourself from Facebook, just try to keep your usage down to a minimum.

  1. I like Facebook and especially think the games on it are very addicting. I actually am not addicted to the actual Facebook but am addicted to the game called Farmville. My brother was the one who hooked me up with a Facebook this summer. I think it is great and a good resource to use and to talk to your friends. I like it but am not really addicted other than the games.

  2. I don’t have a Facebook page, and I’ve never played any of its games. But I have seen how addicted people can get on Facebook games, and I’m just glad that I’m not. I would like to know about some of the games that get people addicted to Facebook and how much the company makes off the games? Great post!

  3. I can’t believe that there a thing called F.A.D. It really surprised that there’s a disorder like that. I like Facebook, but I’m not addicted. I have a fishville and a foopets. I go on that maybe once or twice a day but that’s it. I don’t think I’m addicted but I think many people can be.

  4. If you play facebook games, you should have noticed that some of the premium items in a game take real money to buy. Some people who are really addicted would be willing to spend the money to buy those items. The games make those items extra special so that you just HAVE to have them. For example, in Restaurant City, the best outdoor decorations that actually move and dance around cost ‘playfish cash’. They were so cute and awesome that even I wanted to buy them. The game companies are getting very rich from those items.

  5. Thanks everyone. ryan, to answer your question, some of the games on Facebook are Farmville, like drew said, Fishville, Cafe world, Sorority Life, Bloodlines, Yoville, Mafia wars, Petville, Pet Society, Restaurant City, Rollercoaster Kingdom, Happy Aquarium, Fishworld, Farm Town, Biotronic, Zynga Poker, Bejeweled Blitz, Mindjolt and many, MANY more! I have never heard of some of these games but the ones that I use to play were Farmville. I sometimes play Sorority life when I have the time. My partner Linda will give you the rest of your question. I really hope that you will join Facebook, not only is a fun website, you can connect with people that you originally lost contact with.

  6. I agree with you. Keeping being on the intenet let alone Facebook to a minimum would be great! Just trying to get more people to do it. Also iI think that the apps. like mafia wars, Farmville, and Fishville are some of the most addicting parts of it. I think their so addictive because you just want to make money and keep things alive so you just play it all the time. If they didn’t have so many time wasting apps. then maybe people wouldn’t be on so long. Facebook is a good website, just time consuming.

  7. I totally agree with this because I go home and go on Facebook when I claim to be doing my homework, I am simply just waiting for a new post or picture, and also there are so many applications that I used to play but I quit. I don’t know how Facebook could be so addicting! I’ve talked to most of my friends and they do the same thing as me and every time I go on there are 50-100 people on in my chat that I can talk to. So I am working on a way to limit my hours on the computer and Facebook.

  8. To be exact, the main reason Dayna and I blogged on this topic is since we’ve found that ADULTS are getting unbelievably addicted to Facebook games. They play the same games as we do. There’s also another problem with that- adults are the people who have been laid off. If their boss catches them on Facebook the whole day and not working, why WOULDN’T the boss fire them??

  9. Cameron, I can totally relate! The first thing I do when I get home from school is make a mad dash for the office where the computers are. Since my computer has tabs I can make one Facebook and the other one an “educational site”. When my mom, dad or sister comes in and I’m on Facebook, I just click on the other tab and continue on my homework. If you are unsure if you are addicted or have FAD (Facebook addiction disorder) go on this website and it will explain all the symptoms: http://www.futurelab.net/blogs/marketing-strategy-innovation/2008/05/are_you_suffering_from_faceboo.html

No joke, Facebook is my only life now. Haha. Well, maybe not to that much of an extreme, but whenever I come home from school the first thing I have to do is check Facebook. Literally, its school, minus the learning. And another thing about Facebook is that it’s not as overwhelming as twitter. Because personally, I think twitter is kind of silly. I mean, your updating about your life like every 5 minutes. It’s ridiculous! So anyway, what I’m trying to get at is that, Facebook is a good social networking site, and it helps me unwind from the day, and keep up with friends, and I’m glad I have it.—Good blog!!!
